Environmental justice is a fundamental tool to address the inequalities faced by people from marginalized and vulnerable backgrounds, as well as to protect the rich biodiversity that makes Madagascar unique.

Our environmentally responsible strategy embraces a slow fashion production model, using mostly local organic materials sourced through a transparent supply and production chain.

Since 2022, we are verified by the WFTO (World Fair Trade Organization) for our sustainable and fair-trade practices.

RAPHIA

Our main raw material is raphia, a durable organic fiber that uses the leaves of an endemic tropical palm, Raphia Farinifera.

Our raphia comes from a protected national park in the north of Madagascar, where we work with a local supplier, Kalfane Fils, who holds an amfori BSCI certification for its sustainable practices and processes.
Here, raphia fronds are pruned, not cut – contributing to the overall health and longevity of the plants. The fibers collected through this process are supple, strong, and durable, making them the perfect medium for our creations.

The raphia is then dyed with certified AZO-free pigments, to minimize the risk of allergic reactions, toxins, and heavy metal contaminations. For softer hues and earthy colors, our suppliers use natural, organic colorants from coffee grounds, tea leaves and other dyeing plants. The water used to dye our raphia is either filtered and used to water plants or reused multiple times for the dyeing process.

OTHER MATERIALS

Our textiles come from GOTS-certified suppliers or from the local second-hand market, contributing to sustainable circular economy practices.

Metallic hardware, rhinestones, and leather accents are sourced in Italy to guarantee the highest quality and durability.

Zebu horn details, including our signature MW logo, are a coproduct of the local meat industry, from the non-intensive farming of animals traditionally raised for food.

PACKAGING

Our packaging is made of a natural fiber called raban, also derived from raphia, but woven on a traditional loom. It is reusable and completely recyclable, as we believe it is our duty to share in the “burden of recycling” by providing our customers with zero-waste materials to reduce our collective waste footprint.

PLASTIC FREE

Our products, atelier and packaging are fully plastic free.
Everything we create with raphia is entirely biodegradable in less than 15 years; metal hardware details and textiles can be recycled.

RECYCLING

To minimize waste, we recycle any raphia scraps and turn them into new, one-of-a-kind products – both accessories and ready-to-wear creations, featuring unique combinations of rainbow-hued raphia.

Any unneeded raphia scraps are given away to local nonprofits and small businesses to create projects of their own.

Unused fabric cuttings are repurposed to create reusable hygienic products for the artisans and their children, such as menstrual pads and diapers.
