Gender equality is a fundamental prerequisite to any sustainable development, since it holds a huge potential to reverse inequalities and address any structural barriers that prevent progress.
Even though statistics tell us that women make up 70% of the world’s poor, the same statistics also show that they tend to reinvest a lot more of what they make, however little, in their communities: over 80% of their income is spent to support their families, whereas that percentage averages around 40% for men.
Supporting women, therefore, means supporting their families, their communities, and ultimately the development and resilience of a whole country.
Artisanal work is also a fundamental source of employment and empowerment for women, both worldwide and in Madagascar, where it is the second-largest employer – a clear social and economic resource to build stability, capacity building, market access, peace and security.
