Care Guide
Every piece from Made For A Woman is handwoven by an artisan in Madagascar from natural fibers. With care, your piece will last for years — and the small variations that come with handcraftsmanship will only deepen with time.
A few principles apply to everything we make:
- Natural variations in color, texture, and shape are part of the work. No two pieces are identical, and yours is meant to be exactly as you received it.
- Store your piece in a cool, dry place when not in use, ideally in the dust bag it arrived in.
- Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, which can fade natural dyes over time.
- Avoid prolonged contact with water. Raphia is a natural fiber and absorbs moisture.
Raphia
Raphia is the natural fiber harvested from the Ravenala palm, endemic to Madagascar. It is biodegradable, naturally regenerative, and dyed using non-toxic pigments.
Daily handling
- Handle with clean, dry hands. Oils and lotions can transfer onto the fiber over time.
- Avoid heavy abrasion or contact with rough surfaces.
Storage
- Stuff the piece lightly with tissue paper or a soft cloth to retain its shape.
- Store in its dust bag in a cool, dry place.
- Avoid plastic bags, which can trap moisture.
If your piece gets wet
- Dab gently with a soft, dry cloth.
- Reshape with your hands while damp.
- Air-dry away from direct heat or sunlight.
Cleaning
- For most marks, a soft, dry brush is enough.
- For more stubborn marks, lightly dampen a soft cloth with cool water (no soap) and dab gently.
- Never submerge, machine wash, or dry clean.
Color and patina
- Natural dyes deepen with light exposure over time. Some fading is expected and is part of the piece's character.
- The Bombé in particular develops a richer texture with use.
Crochet
Crochet pieces are hand-stitched from natural raphia, using techniques specific to our atelier.
Daily handling
- Handle gently. Crochet stitches can catch on sharp edges, jewelry, or rough surfaces.
- Avoid pulling on loose strands. If a stitch loosens, contact us — most fixes are simple at the atelier.
Storage
- Store flat or gently folded.
- Avoid hanging crochet pieces, which can stretch over time.
If your piece gets wet
- Lay flat to dry, reshaping by hand.
- Do not wring or twist.
Cleaning
- Spot-clean only, with a soft cloth and cool water.
Leather Accents
Some pieces include leather handles, straps, or details. For these:
- Wipe with a soft, dry cloth.
- Avoid water and leather conditioners not specifically formulated for natural-finish leather.
- Store away from direct heat.
